this seemed a good place as any place to place this info

the initial design/draft about mining according to Star Citizen : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14522-Star-Citizen-Careers-Mining

The Two/Three most important section for us appear the be the last 3 paragraphs of the "FINDING A SUITABLE ASTEROID FIELD"  section (quoting it for the lazy people)

Spoiler:

also while reading the part about the Orion ship ( https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14518-Rugged-Colossus-Orion-Mining-Platform )

I've saw the following line:
a single Orion can locate, identify and extract lucrative ores

also it appears that the Orion can hold more cargo units then for example a Caterpillar (16888 vs 3200 ), but i don't know how accurate that is. though seeing those numbers it might be subject to change.
However it appears that the cargo storage (containers) do appear to be interchangeable. so there might be a possibility to have some ships flying back and forward with those containers ( Starfarer/Caterpilar)  and have them being loaded by the drones from the ship.

Hey Caracca, thanks for the above info.

The things I was most interested in the Orion information release are below (with my initial thoughts/comments):

Exothermic Reaction Detector
Spoiler:
1. Each minable material (metal? up until now we're working under the assumption the Orion mines metals, and hydrocarbons can be magically produced/harvested...where?) has parameters dictating energy absorption, dissipation of energy, transfer of energy, fragmentation (threshold/critical point and fracture behavior I'm guessing), and etc.
2. What if we want to access these volatile gases for refinement in a Starfarer? Also, lets hope there are different types of volatile gases and that size of gas deposit and density are not the only parameters determining criticality threshold.

Laser Seismometer
Spoiler:
1. Caracca...that seismometer LED screen. Makes me a little concerned they have no geoscience consultants on their payroll. Seismometers don't require 4 lines. However, it could be cool if they split up the seismometer readout based on direction of wave propagation and wave type. I'm no astrophysicist, so I don't know shit about waves in a vacuum, but I have a feeling they propagate...less. They need a medium in which to travel, so I wonder if the seismometer itself (all you need is a accelerometer, every smartphone is in and of itself a seismometer) is in the RAMP missile? Could the quality of the seismometer result vary based on precision of the RAMP placement? That would be fucking sweet! Smile

2. Science fiction, pockets of gas exposed to space cause explosive decompression...okay. I'll take it, whatever. Razz

Analytical Materials Processor
Spoiler:
1. Holy shit YES! Also, APPROXIMATE QUANTITIES? Fancy technology. Razz I would have been more satisfied with % of metals (a la spectrometry), but I'll take this too. I just hope they have a more or less complete periodic table represented in the game. Leave out most of the Actinoids and Lanthanoids, but for heaven's sake we better have more than 12 metals in this game.
2. I wonder if some of this tech will be available in smaller forms and can be equipped on another RSI ship (imagine a Connie Aquila outfitted as a mini mining analyzer, SWEET).
3. The fact that this is just an "Analytical Processor" gives me great hope that they are waiting for the research class ships (Endeavor) to have the heavier duty analysis and lab equipment (mass specs, spectrometers, electron microscopes, HC analysis, etc.).

Finally, I really like the idea of being able to refine on the go. You could head to an asteroid belt, camp out there with a starfarer and an escort before you fill up the ship with refined uranium (or some other high value metal, rare earths? i bet those fetch a nice price on the black market...). The fact that you can mine and then store stuff planetside is incredible too, could be a thing to do while we don't have an active contract. Mine the hell out of a metal when the price is down, then store it away for a day when the price spikes back up in a sector near us. Kind of a working investment in the PU. I'm guessing there will be some kind of inflation in the economy, so putting metals away might not be a bad idea for us to store currency.

regarding the gasses, i believe they mentioned somewhere in the past that you can harvest these from either stars and/or gas planets.
however based on that and the current new mining intel,, i am also speculating that there will prolly be gas clouds ( in the same way that there are asteroid fields, maybe even mixed)

and with the regards of the geo-sciences, just mail them and tell them how wrong they are ;P ( as personally i only might have some sub-par knowledge about the subject). maybe think, OK we will have 4-d seismic mapping, therefor 4 lines.

i think the missile concept is nice.

and
Could the quality of the seismometer result vary based on precision of the RAMP placement
from what i interpreteded from the report. yes Razz

Don't be so modest Caracca, I'm sure your G&G knowledge from Shell could kick me out of the solar system. I was never supposed to be a scientist, but I needed the money...Wink

seems a joint mission with ESA and NASA is gonna do some interesting work in the future
